Couples all over the United States are forging ahead in the name of love, and having the wedding of their dreams in the year 2020. But how did you find yourself here? Maybe your Spring wedding was postponed until Fall, or you’ve decided to elope now and party later, or you and your partner looked at each other and knew today was the day you would join hands as one. You’re here because you’re looking for the perfect flowers to complement your fall nuptials. Good news, I’ve consolidated hours of research into this easy list just for you.
This list comes from sales analysis, hours of Pinterest scrolling, years of trend knowledge, and taking a look at what some of the trend setters are saying. The flowers listed below are some fall staples, and the freshest new additions to the warm-toned season. All of these flowers will handle the varied weather across the United States, ranging from high heat and beating sun, to the cooler, frost bitten days. All flowers and dried products listed below are available at FiftyFlowers.com.
1. Dahlias
Dahlia’s are one of the hottest trending flowers right now, and I can tell why. Their shapes, colors, and size are so varied. This allows for every couple to be as creative as they would love to be. Looking for a colossal focal flower? The dinner plate sized Evening Sun is the dahlia for you. Or, are you looking for a unique texture or color? If so, check out the Copper Penny Dahlia. One thing to keep in mind with dahlias is that while they are grown in the warmer parts of summer, once cut, they need to be kept cooler than the temperature outside. FiftyFlowers has found a solution to this with the Bahlia flower! It is a variety of mum grown to look similar to the dahlia.
2. Lilies
There are two popular types of lilies used in wedding arrangements: the standard oriental or asiatic lily, and the calla lily. Both are famous for their unique shape, and in the case of the oriental or asiatic lily, their scent. They are a great focal flower, and come in a large variety of colors.
3. Daisies
I would also like to break daisies into several other types of flowers. While they are not exactly daisies, they are very similar, and I find that mums, poms, and buttons also are as popular and in the same family as daisies. They are a hearty flower which can handle the heat. They also come in many colors and shapes, which makes them a highly versatile flower. Gerbera Daisies are another variation of the daisy flower, but looks vastly different. It’s blooms are larger, and you will only find one on it’s very smooth, tubular stem.
4. Peonies
Due to the genius of our breeders and farmers, FiftyFlowers is excited to offer a variety of Peonies in the Fall. This typical early spring bloom is a wedding classic. And how could it not be. With it’s intriguing blooming process, the flowers starts as a small golf ball shape, and then pops into a large luxurious bloom anywhere from the size of your fist to the size of a soft ball.
5. Cat Tails
Yup! I’m talking about those brown puffs that grow from the reedy grasses along ponds. These fun accents have been a fall classic for years, but they have recently emerged as a new, trendy, floral element. Their dark, earthy tone gives the design a natural foraged look, and I love the dimension it creates in an arrangement or tablescape.
6. Football mum
A Victorian classic coming back for another go around in this century, the football mum is a flower I love to suggest to give a design a lush, garden vibe. Their soft petals come with too many to count which is what makes them so elegant and luscious.
7. Carnations
I’ll admit, when I started my floral career, carnations were not at the top of my list as my favorite flowers. But, after seeing just how many colors they come in and when arranged in fun new ways, it has become one of my favorites. Like Daisies and mums they are incredibly hearty, which makes them great for anyone holding a ceremony in warmer climates. Did you know that if you group them together, they look like a peony? Try it out!
8. Pampas Grass
This fun and feathery grass is such an awesome new texture that is taking the floral world by storm. A fun tip to help cut down on the shedding seeds is to spray the pampas grass with hair spray.
9. Sun Palm
Native to the tropical ecosystems of the world and migrating into the design consciousness of the world, Sun Palms are so much fun to add to your bouquet or arch piece. They are beautiful when left in their natural state, leaves spiking out, or cut into spear-like shapes. Sun Palms add dimension and beautiful dried texture.
10. Bleached Ruscus
Ruscus is a classic wedding greenery. However, with modern technology, we can bleach all the color from it, making it into a unique, white accent in any design.
11. Roses
Roses are a wedding staple, I don’t think that will ever change. But the trending colors shift with time and trends and I found these to be the most swoon worthy for the coming fall season: Creamy Whites, Toffee, Quicksand, Garden Roses, and 50 Shades of Early Gray Roses.
12. Orchids
Again, native to the tropical ecosystems of the Earth, Orchids grow in the shade of the canopy’s on the sides of trees and other large plants. There are numerous types of flowers that these amazing plants produce, but I found these to be the hottest of the season: Phalaenopsis, Cymbidium, and Lady Slipper. They elevate the look of any bouquet or arrangement without using too many stems.
13. Ranunculus
Don’t get me started on these lush little babies. They may look small, but their blossoms pack a punch. I am in love with the classic ranunculus, but have been swooning for the new Japanese Butterfly variety. And there is a shade for every theme, so they’ll pair well with any style you choose.
14. Amaranthus
I love a hanging moment in a wedding bouquet, or even boutonnière. The shades of burgundy or green are perfect for a fall ceremony. This flower also comes in a rust shade, in a more upright stem and looks so interesting poking out of a bouquet.
15. Anthurium
These hearty tropicals look like hearts too! I love that they come in so many sizes and colors. It makes it easy to get creative with your flowers when you have such a variety.
16. Proteas
Tropicals are hot, hot, hot this season since they are able to handle the heat so well, they can also give an unusually fun texture to your designs. Proteas come in many different types. The trendiest of all being the King, Queen, Blushing Bride or Pin Cushion proteas.
17. Thistle
Thistle is a fun fall texture. Like the weeds you might see growing, they are prickly! What I find fascinating about the eryngium variety is their blue shade. Blue is an underrated color when it comes to fall color palettes, so I love to see a few of these placed into a design.
18. Scabiosa
These funky little blooms almost have an out of this world appearance to me, which makes me love them even more. They are the perfect focal flower for a textured garden look. Their centers are puffy round groupings of petals with little white tendrils poking out and then surrounded by flared out petals. You can find them in a variety of colors.
19. Gomphrena
My favorite shade of Gomphrena is the red shade, which has little yellow accents that make it look like a strawberry. These little flowers are great as a new form of filler flower, and can handle the heat at the hottest part of the day. They are also incredibly easy to hang and dry after your event to keep as a lasting memory.
20. Anemone
How can a flower with so little to it look so stunning. This is one of the HOTTEST flowers coming into the scene for their striking black centers and delicate petals. My favorite is the white anemone, but I’ve never seen an anemone I didn’t like. They pair well with any fall look as complimentary or contrasting, which ever color palette floats your fancy.
The vibe of fall is one that reflects the natural beauty of nature, which can also be shown in many different color palettes. The traditional palette is the classic red, yellow and orange, but it’s been so neat to see the introduction of orangey shades of pinks (apricot or peach) or fun mixes with different shades of blue, which is 2020’s color of the year! These flowers and their awesome shades could help you transform your spring palette into a fall palette with minimal changes. Or a palette that is seasonal neutral is the timeless white and black. You’ll never be out of style, and FiftyFlowers offers almost all of these flowers in beautiful shades of white.
