The products team at FiftyFlowers plays an important role in bringing fresh flowers to your doorstep. It’s these team members that have the hands-on task of taking blooms from the farm and turning them into products that can be purchased on our website. A crucial part of their job is caring for flowers as they come into our Bloom Studio located in Boise, Idaho.
Maiya joined our products team a few months ago and is featured in today’s blog for her words of wisdom on flower care. She specifically has some great advice focused on the power of flower food!
Our Flower Tool Kits come with flower food and a variety of other floral design tools that will help you create flower arrangements like a professional. Add these to your cart when you purchase your flowers, or if you already ordered flowers, purchase a kit separately and have it delivered before your blooms arrive!

Meet Maiya: The Flower Food Expert
Here are Maiya’s tips and tricks for using flower food:
Hi!! I’m Maiya, and I’m part of the product development team here at FiftyFlowers. One of my absolute favorite parts of my job is getting to interact with all the flower samples that come through the office. Even though I’ve only been on the team for about three months, I’ve gotten to learn so much about flowers and how to properly care for them!
Here’s the thing with flowers: You’ll get to enjoy them for so much longer if you know how to take care of them! One simple way to care for your flowers is with flower food. It might come wrapped to the stems of your flowers, or be available for purchase on our website, and it’s so easy to use. Here are a few facts and tips about flower food that I’ve learned along the way:
Why use flower food? – It kills bacteria.
When you’ve put your flowers in a vase with water, that water takes a long journey from the bottom of the stem to the tips of the petals. There’s a chance that bacteria could potentially grow with that journey! Putting flower food in your water helps keep that bacteria at bay and keep your flowers looking fresh.
How much flower food is needed? – A little goes a long way.
News flash: You don’t need to dump the entire packet of flower food in at once! (I’ve been there and done that…) In a standard vase, like the one you might have in your kitchen, about a quarter of the packet is perfectly enough. Don’t throw the rest away, though – save it for later!
How can you keep your flowers fresh? – Re-water, re-feed, and refresh!
Keep your flowers lasting longer by putting fresh water and flower food in your vase every few days. You can also give your stems a fresh cut (about half an inch) so that they’ll drink up the water more easily!
I’m so happy to be a member of this amazing FiftyFlowers fam. I’m excited to keep learning something new about flowers every single day!
