We’re all familiar with the wreath. Wreaths are widely popular during the winter holiday season. As I began to write this piece, I found myself asking, where did this trend really begin? And, where could I now, in the current year of 2020, adapt the use of the wreath from its traditional roots? All traditions change over time. This is how we stay current to the needs or realities of the times that we live in, and I was inspired by all the different ways I’ve discovered that a wreath could be styled besides adorning a front door.
The symbol of the wreath has ancient beginnings. In the Greek and Roman times, a wreath was given to the victor of a battle, someone of societal importance, like a government official, or a bride on her wedding day. Later, the Christians folded it into their symbolism along with the use of the pine tree for Christmas. When the pine tree was trimmed, the extra branches would be formed into the wreath! An interesting note from the author of this Times article was that “Together, the circular shape and the evergreen material make the wreath a representation of eternal life.” I love to see the intention put into holiday symbols and I never realized that the simple door wreath was as such. The last lines of this article particularly stood out, so I will share them with you; “We live in a throwaway culture,” says Collins. “The wreath was born out of not throwing things away.” The author being quoted here is Ace Collins who wrote Stories Behind the Great Traditions of Christmas. So how can we increase the usability, sustainability, and versatility of our wreaths?

I will answer this question for you with 5 stunning ways to style your wreath, spreading the cheer of the holiday season all-around your house, wedding, or event. I also have a helpful care video that will show you how to keep your pine wreath fresh for weeks.
So here are my top 5 versatile ways to style a wreath!
1. In Your Window
This look is similar to hanging your wreath on a door or window but makes this wreath viewable and enjoyable from both inside and outside of the house. Added bonus, the sunlight from the wreath hanging in the window should activate some of its natural pine scents!
2. On A Chair
What a fun way to make everyone at the table feel special! This wreath was easily pinned into this padded cloth chair and hung with satin ribbon. You can personalize the wreath with trinkets or a name card for the person who is designated to sit in the chair at the holiday table.
3. Coffee Table
This was the look that inspired this whole post! The informality of this decor is so cozy to me. We always think of wreaths as a hanging element. Placing the wreath lying horizontally is the complete opposite. When I styled the picture on the coffee table, it felt almost rebellious and like the emergence of a new trend in wreaths.I added the candle to give it an extra cozy element. Make sure you watch the video below to learn how to keep your wreath fresh.
4. Centerpiece
A floral centerpiece is another traditional element to the holiday, wedding, or event table. A greenery wreath makes it simple to decorate the center of your table in two ways. One: greenery is trending right now, and can be used by itself as stunning table decor, like the picture above.
Two: Fresh cut flowers can be incorporated into wreaths! Use the wreath as your greenery base, place your fresh cut flowers into water tubes to keep the flowers hydrated, decorate the flowers in your wreath. Using the fresh cut flowers placed in the water tubes and placing them strategically throughout the wreath helps save you time during the design process. This will save you a lot of time in your design process.
5. Front of Your Car
This one is a personal favorite, and I’m proud to show off my beautiful blue Toyota T-100. This wreath can be created in one of our Live Design Wreath Class with Steven Santos.
