Wedding Favors: From Cake to Cabernet

Rock hard wedding cake. We’ve all had it in our houses; a testament to attendance at a friend’s or family member’s reception, but ultimately neither the most personal, nor sanitary type of wedding favor available. With the limitless options that exist for couples these days, trying to pin down exactly what to give out to say thank you to your guests can be (like most things wedding-involved) overwhelming.
The cake route is still a favorite amongst wedding traditionalists, and truly there is absolutely nothing wrong with presenting attendees with a sliver of your gateau. One thing to consider is the type of cake you’ve chosen. A fondant or mousse cake might look fabulous the day of, and the week after the wedding, but don’t expect it to keep indefinitely as a memory for your loved ones. Generally speaking it’s best to have a separate, smaller, and less perishable cake, such as a fruit cake, made up specifically for the purpose of wedding favours.
Alternatively, many couples now select wines for their reception that have personalized labels bearing the couple’s ceremony details and/or picture. These make great mementos, either placed in small, inexpensive frames, or send folks home with a full bottle of wine, complete with label, to keep for years, or enjoy with dinner at their leisure.
If you would rather try something different, and non-consumable, computers provide easy access to home made wedding favors from the heart. Creating your own CDs has never been easier, so pick your medium (music or pictures and video) and get creating! It doesn’t have to be anything overly fancy or professional. Put together a compilation of yours and your hubbies favorite songs, including your wedding song, and create a CD cover out of one of your wedding photos. Or, and this works very well, place a disposable camera in the middle of every table at the reception and encourage guests to snap pictures throughout the evening. At the end of the festivities, have the cameras developed and create photo memory discs with the details of your wedding on the cover. Guests will then be able to look over the solemn, sincere and silly moments of your ceremony whenever they want, just by popping in a disk.
There really are no constraints to what you give as favors, if you choose to give them at all. Theme weddings provide particularly good opportunities for quirky, memorable items, but that doesn’t mean that traditional style proceedings are relegated only to traditional things. Be creative! Your guests will remember you more for it.
