Wedding Cake Traditions

One of the most important aspects of a wedding is the wedding cake. This tradition dates back to the Roman Empire, when the groom used to break a piece of a wheat bread on top of the bride’s head to ensure fertility. In the 19th century, the idea of a white cake became very popular and now it was a bigger, single tiered plum cake. Around this time, the wedding cake became a symbol of purity and was highly associated with the bride. The bride would cut the cake and feed her guests thanking them for joining her in this new stage as a married woman.

Tradition has not changed much since the Victorian times. Nowadays, the bride, with the help of the groom, will cut the cake as a symbolism of their commitment to each other and as the first task they carry out together as husband and wife. They will feed each other and after this simple ceremony, they will serve their guests. This is usually one of the highlights of the event, and it is a cherished memory by the couple. Today’s cakes may have as many tiers as the couple wants, but generally it will have three: the bottom layer to feed the guests, the middle layer to feed the family during the reception, and the top layer that must be kept and eaten on the couple’s first year anniversary.

Wedding cakes can be created in nearly every size, shape and form. They can also me made to match the wedding colors, and can be made out of any flavor. Cake toppers are also commonly used to make a cake unique. The traditional bride-groom figurine will never go out of style, and it is still a very popular option when decorating the wedding cake. For a contemporary-glam look, monogrammed letters made out of rhinestones or crystals is a good, budget friendly option. For a fresh, natural look, flowers are a great alternative for cake decorations. Always remember that flowers must be placed on top of wax paper so that there isn’t direct contact between the cake and the flowers which will prevent staining. Organic flowers are good choices for this purpose. You can also scatter rose petals on top of your cake and get a simple yet elegant look for your reception.

Remember that you can be as creative as you want with your cake. The key point is to have fun!
