To ensure they last a long time, cut early in the morning or late at night when they are least under stress. Take a bucket of water with you and as you cut each flower stem, place it immediately into water. I usually cut flowers that are just beginning to bloom or will open later that day. As you are putting them into the vase, you will need to cut them again, making sure it is a diagonal cut - which is best when you want them to absorb water. You don’t have to make the second cut a large one. Cutting underneath the water faucet while you are cutting will help ensure that no air bubbles will get into the stem and will keep your flowers alive longer. Every three to four days recut your flower stem to keep it fresh. You may have to change the vase.
