Flower Spotlight: Freesia

November 21st, 2006 Posted in Wedding Planning and Ideas

With so many wedding styles available, a bride may be falling asleep at night by counting flowers instead of sheep. She may be pondering whether or not to hire a florist, how many flowers will be necessary, what percentage of the budget should go to flowers, and most importantly, which flowers should she choose? To help brides learn more about other wedding flowers aside from the rose, we are spotlighting popular selections that are being used across the country. In this week’s flower spotlight is freesia.

First some background information. Freesia is available as both a fresh cut flower and a garden flower. Although the two forms vary in quality, both are equally as beautiful and fragrant. Freesias are available in almost every color, including purple, yellow, white, pink, orange and red. Due to their sweet fragrance, extracts of this flower are commonly used in lotions, shampoos and other scented beauty care products.

Freesia’s popularity amongst other wedding flowers has been steadily increasing. Maybe it is due to their captivating scent or to the fact that they are available year round. Either way, these delightful flowers can compliment nearly any wedding bouquet or table centerpiece. Their small yet colorful blooms are often considered the modern day baby’s breath. Freesia is usually the secondary flower within arrangements. But this is not due to their lack of beauty. On the contrary, a bouquet full of stunning freesia flowers can be quite fragrant and may send the bride sneezing her way down the aisle!
