ESPN Plans A Wedding

A match made in the end zone? Now that’s different.

ESPN Radio is stepping out to appease it’s growing female demographic. Recently on the morning show, hosts Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic announced that they will be giving away a wedding.

A wedding? Beyond the bachelor party, what possible interest could ESPN have in a wedding? Isn’t that for the Oxygen or Lifetime network?

But "that’s kind of why I liked it," says Larry Gifford, program director for ESPN Radio. "It was a little weird."

It was called the "Mike and Mike Marriage Madness" contests and couples were to submit an essay explaining what sports meant in their relationship. The crew received many essays and just like in March Madness, the contest was narrowed down the the "Sweet 16". Those couples were each awarded a flat screen TV and voted on by some 180,000 listeners. (Are we surprises that most the top essays were written by women?)

The winnering couple was announced last Thursday at the ESPN zone in New York. The winning couple were Florida Gator fans dressed for the occassion.

Catherine Bennett and Jason West of Florida will be wed on May 26th with the help of ESPN. The prize package includes round trip travel and hotel acoommodations for the couple and 20 friends or relatives, wedding invitations, decorations, and food for the reception which will be held at the ESPN headquarters (and not to mention the experience of planning a live wedding with ESPN!)

"The contest went pretty well," says Gifford. "Now we have to see how we do with a wedding."

For the record, he’s optimistic.

Either way, we will probably see more groom involvement than usual in this planing process!
