Blue Flowers

Naturally blue flowers are a rare gift of Mother Nature. Blue is an unusual hue when it comes to flowers. Blue flowers represent trust and unity. Perhaps that’s why every bride diligently searches for her “something blue.” Wedding aside, blue flowers bring a sense of confidence, elegance and sophistication to an event. Flower seekers beware, many flowers are dyed or tinted in order to achieve a blue color. Others have “blue” in their names, but are truly shades of purples, lavenders and pinks. Although such flowers may be beautiful, the recipient may be disappointed if expecting a true blue. To help you with your search for naturally blue flowers, we provide you with a following list of naturally blue flowers and a brief description of the flower.

Delphinium has numerous, breathtaking blue florets that line its long slender stem.  Delphinium offers natural shades of light blue, true blue and royal blue. It is the perfect blue flower to give height and color to centerpieces. Another popular blue flower is the Hydrangea. Whether you are using light or dark blue, the hydrangea’s large bushy head demands attention and will not be overlooked within an arrangement. The Iris also offers captivating light and true blues. This flower dates back to ancient times, where both the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians associated it with their Gods and Pharaohs. Blue hues aside, the Delphinium, Hydrangea and Iris are stunning flowers for any centerpiece or arrangement.

As for adding just a splash of blue, Freesia is an increasingly popular flower with a lovely fragrance.  Hyacinth is also a fragrant flower available in blue.  Its sweet smell and large cluster of numerous florets makes the Hyacinth a symbol of springtime. For tall arrangements, blue Larkspur is the perfect flower if trying to set a charming, countryside feel. The Freesia, Hyacinth and Larkspur may serve alone if used in smaller centerpieces or arrangements, or may add the perfect splash of blue when placed in larger ones.

To add a hint of blue, try natural blue filler flowers. Statice and Trachellium’s small leaflets may have just the accent you desire. Thistle is a unique blue flower with a spiky, snowflake shaped bloom, perfect for winter weddings.
